WWE have announced that Sasha Banks and Naomi have been suspended until further notice.
The announcement was made on the May 20th SmackDown. Michael Cole spoke to the camera and stated that the WWE Women’s Champions “let us all down.” Cole would go on to describe the events that took place on Monday and said that their actions were disappointing. The address ended by announcing that both Banks and Naomi have been suspended indefinitely and that a tournament will be taking place to crown new Women’s Tag Team Champions.
The events that were referenced took place on the May 16th episode of Monday Night Raw. Sasha Banks and Naomi were originally due to take part in a six pack challenge match, with the winner facing Bianca Belair for the Raw Women’s Championship at the Hell in a Cell Premium Live Event. However, the now former Women’s WWE Tag Team Champions were reportedly not happy with the creative of this match, and instead chose to walk out of Raw.
WWE issued an official statement regarding the events that took place, which is very rare for the company to do when not for storyline purposes. The report states that Banks and Naomi did not felt respected enough as champions.
It should be noted that at the time of writing, both Sasha Banks and Naomi have been removed from the current roster page of WWE.com and all merchandise relating to each of the respective superstars has been removed from WWE Shop.
The match to determine who would next face Bianca Belair was instead turned into a singles match between Asuka and Becky Lynch, with The Empress of Tomorrow becoming victorious.
