WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out of the May 17th edition of Monday Night Raw.
When Raw went on air, it was announced that a six pack challenge match would take place, with the winner facing Raw Women’s Champion Bianca Belair at the Hell in a Cell Premium Live Event. The original contestants were Sasha Banks, Naomi, Nikki A.S.H., Doudrop, Asuka and Becky Lynch.
The match was later changed to a singles match between Asuka and Becky Lynch with little explanation. It should be noted that during an interaction with Becky Lynch and WWE Official Adam Pearce backstage, Lynch did state that she saw Banks and Naomi leave the arena. However, new information came to light later in the show, with it being announced that Banks and Naomi had exited the building, and would not be participating in the main event. WWE released a statement on WWE.com stating that the champions placed their titles onto John Laurinaitis’ desk and walked out.
The full statement released by WWE is as follows:
When Sasha Banks and Naomi arrived at the arena this afternoon, they were informed of their participation in the main event of tonight’s Monday Night Raw.
During the broadcast, they walked into WWE Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis office with their suitcases in hand, placed their tag team championship belts on his desk and walked out.
They claimed they weren’t respected enough as tag team champions. And even though they had eight hours to rehearse and construct their match, they claimed they were uncomfortable in the ring with two of their opponents even though they’d had matches with those individuals in the past with no consequence. Monday Night Raw is a scripted live TV show, whose characters are expected to perform the requirements of their contract.
We regret we were unable to deliver, as advertised, tonight’s main event.
Fightful have provided more details as to why the events took place. Fightful were told that Sasha Banks met with Vince McMahon to voice her frustrations about creative, but neither party would budge. A follow-up report by the premium Select service states that Banks and Naomi wanted to face Doudrop and Nikki A.S.H. at Hell in a Cell, but this was turned down. The report concludes by stating that Naomi was originally planned to win the six pack challenge.
