First Match Announced For WWE WrestleMania Backlash 2022

WWE have officially announced the first match to take place at the WrestleMania Backlash Premium Live Event.

In a rematch from WrestleMania 38, Charlotte Flair will once again defend the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Ronda Rousey. However, as the WrestleMania match was a standard singles match, the WrestleMania Backlash match will be fought under “I Quit” rules. This is where there are no pinfalls, submissions, countouts or disqualifications. To be victorious, the competitor has to force their opponent to say the words “I Quit” into a microphone.

Rousey would open the SmackDown after WrestleMania to express her frustration at the circumstances that took place in the title match. The 2022 Women’s Royal Rumble winner would then go on to challenge The Queen to the “I Quit” match. Charlotte Flair would appear on the big screen and reject the challenge, saying that Ronda needed to go to the back of the line. Rousey would continue to approach WWE Official Adam Pearce in regards to this challenge, where the match was later confirmed after SmackDown finished the broadcast.

At WrestleMania 38, Flair retained the championship over Rousey in controversial fashion. Following the referee being knocked down in the match, Ronda Rousey would visibly make Charlotte Flair tap out. However, with the referee not seeing the submission, the match was not over. When the referee was revived, Flair would hit a big boot to pin Rousey for a second time at WrestleMania.

At the time of writing, this is the only match that has been officially announced for the WrestleMania Backlash Premium Live Event, which will air on Sunday, May 8th.
