Bron Breakker Wins NXT Championship

Bron Breakker is the new NXT Champion following the events that took place at the New Year’s Evil special edition of NXT. In the main event of the show, Breakker defeated Tommaso Ciampa to capture the first championship in his NXT career.

Both Ciampa and Breakker have been feuding over the top title in NXT over the past few months. Bron Breakker first challenged for the NXT Championship at the Halloween Havoc special, in which Ciampa was able to retain. Each man would go onto to captain a respective team at the WarGames pay-per-view, which saw Bron pin Tommaso in the signature match. Following this result, a match was eventually agreed for New Year’s Evil.

Much like WarGames, the match was presented as an old era vs. new era of NXT. Breakker sent a message to the now former champion during the entrances by smashing through a golden X, referencing the previous black and gold iteration of NXT:

The closing sequence saw Ciampa hit The Fairytale Ending onto Breakker, in which the announce team and the audience thought would be the end of the match. However, Bron would kick out of the finisher, much to the shock of the former NXT Champion. Bron Breakker would eventually lock in the Steiner Recliner to force Ciampa to submit, earning Bron the victory.

Despite holding the NXT Championship twice, this is the first time that Tommaso Ciampa has lost the top title in the promotion. Ciampa first defeated Aleister Black for the NXT title on the July 25th 2018 edition of NXT, but would relinquish the championship in 2019 due to injury. Ciampa would go on to win the NXT Championship for a second time on the first episode of NXT 2.0.

Following the victory by Bron Breakker, his father Rick Steiner made his way to the win. Steiner previously wrestled in WCW, where he was a multiple time Television and Tag Team Champion for the promotion.
