A major title change took place at the WWE Day 1 pay-per-view on January 1st, 2022. In the main event of the show, Brock Lesnar pinned Big E to capture the WWE Championship for a 6th time in his career.
Lesnar was originally due to face Roman Reigns at Day 1 for the Universal Championship. However, Reigns announced on social media before the event that he had tested positive for COVID-19, so would be unable to compete at the pay-per-view. Shortly after this announcement, WWE issued a press release stating that Brock Lesnar would be inserted into the WWE Championship match.
The final match of Day 1 saw WWE Champion Big E defend the title against Lesnar, Bobby Lashley, Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins in a Fatal 5-Way match. The match was non-stop action from the start with highlights including Bobby Lashley spearing Brock Lesnar through the barricade and Lashley getting thrown through the announcer’s table. The finish of the match saw Lesnar hit the now former champion Big E with an F5 to pick up the victory via pinfall.
The current WWE Championship reign by The Beast now makes Lesnar a 9 time world champion in WWE, as Brock has held the Universal Championship 3 times on top of the 6 WWE title reigns.
It is unknown what is next for Brock Lesnar following this shock victory. The Beast was previously feuding with Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. However, as each man is now the top champion of each of WWE’s brands, it is unknown whether this rivalry is set to continue.
