Two NXT Championships are set to be unified at the upcoming NXT special New Year’s Evil. The title unification match will see the Cruiserweight and North American titles defended on the show, as Roderick Strong and Carmelo Hayes will put their respective titles on the line on January 4th.
Malcom Bivens of The Diamond Mine faction, to which Roderick Strong is a part of, issued the challenge on the December 21st edition of NXT.
Bivens stated that Diamond Mine is about “Respect and money” and that they are all about “The big money matches.” The challenge of champion vs. champion was then laid down by The Diamond mIne during the backstage promo segment.
NXT confirmed the news later in the show that the two championships would be unified by promoting a contract signing for the match will be taking place on the following week’s episode.
NXT have been seemingly moving away from the NXT Championship in recent weeks. Most notably at NXT WarGames, where Strong defended the Cruiserweight Title against Joe Gacy at the pay-per-view. Despite Gacy weighing over the 205 lb, cruiserweight limit was lifted for this match and some of Strong’s subsequent defences.
The following matches have been confirmed for New Year’s Evil:
- Tommaso Ciampa (c) vs. Bron Breakker – Singles match for the NXT Championship.
- Roderick Strong (c) vs. Carmelo Hayes (c) – Singles match to unify the Cruiserweight and North American Championships.
- Mandy Rose (c) vs. Cora Jade vs. Raquel Gonzalez – Triple Threat match for the NXT Women’s Championship.
