Greg Hamilton has relinquished his ring announcing duties for WWE. The now former SmackDown ring announcer was reportedly released from his WWE contract on Tuesday night [October 27th], with the original report coming from PWInsider. However, until recently, no official statement was made by either party regarding the rumoured departure.
It should be noted that Hamilton hit the headlines recently by taking exception to rapper Westside Gunn sampling his ring announcing for a track without the announcer’s permission. In a series of now deleted Instagram comments, Hamilton expressed his disapproval of the unauthorised sampling, and even threatened to get WWE’s legal team involved:
Well @westsidegunn @buffalokidsgallery let’s hope that since you STOLE my voice for your incoherent kindergarten fables…that you saved up enough delivering for Door Dash….because….You….are…,” he wrote, adding an angry faced emoji to substitute a word. “You’ll be paying me for years….apologize and I’ll think about not collecting every dime for the rest of your life….or I can just get WWE lawyers….that’s ok too. Settle with my lawyer. And don’t EVER use my voice again….so wrong.“
Hamilton continued:
“It was 20k, but at noon eastern it’s $30k and we go to court,” He added in another comment, “Tick… tock… the longer this goes, the longer I have in court… you ready to settle or do u wanna dance with WWE lawyers? It’s a slam dunk. Price goes up by the day.”
While some have speculated that this interaction may have been a reason behind the release, Greg Hamilton [real name Greg Hutson] has broken his silence on the recent news on his Instagram page. In a statement on a black and white photo, the former ring announcer has stated that the departure was mutual between himself and WWE. The following statement can be read below:
As mentioned in the post, Greg Hamilton was with the company for 6 years. There has been no official announcement as to who the new ring announcer will be moving forward.
