Roman Reigns will defend his Universal Championship against Finn Balor at the Extreme Rules pay per view on Sunday September 26th. The news has been announced on WWE.com
Balor initially looked to be the next challenger for Roman Reigns at SummerSlam. However, during the contract signing back on the July 30th SmackDown, John Cena interrupted and signed his name instead. Cena went on to lose the match in the main event of SummerSlam on August 21st.
On the SmackDown following SummerSlam, Balor interrupted The Tribal Chief’s Championship celebration, setting himself up to be the next challenger at Extreme Rules. The inaugural Universal Champion did receive an opportunity on the September 3rd edition of the blue brand. However, The Usos jumped Finn before the bell, and Roman went on to once again retain his Universal Championship.
As with all other current matches announced for Extreme Rules at the time of writing, the match is listed as a standard singles match. However, as is the nature of the pay per view, expect multiple matches to have added stipulations involving specific weapons or an Extreme Rules match.
SmackDown was nearly not the next destination for Finn Balor. In a recent interview, the former NXT Champion expressed a desire to work the NXT UK brand first.
