Roman Reigns Accepts Finn Balor’s Challenge

The next challenger for Roman Reigns’ Universal Championship has been seemingly announced on SmackDown. Instead of John Cena, Finn Balor appears to be next in line to take on The Tribal Chief. It was heavily speculated that the Reigns vs. Cena match for SummerSlam was going to be confirmed on the June 23rd edition of the blue brand. The show opened with John Cena issuing his challenge to The Universal Champion:

Roman Reigns did not immediately answer the challenge laid out by John Cena. Instead, Paul Heyman interrupted the 16 time world champion. Heyman stated that Cena would get his answer, but he would have to wait for it until later on in the night.

In the main event segment of the show, The Head of the Table made his way to the ring and stated that the answer to John’s challenge was a no. In a surprise appearance, Finn Balor then came to the ring to confront the Universal Champion. Earlier in the night, Balor had a match against Sami Zayn, the first match for Finn on the main roster since SummerSlam 2019.

The inaugural Universal Champion then said the following to the current champion in regards to Reigns’ next opponent:

‘I’m not here to acknowledge you. But if you’re not interested in John Cena’s challenge, maybe you are interested in mine.’

Roman accepted the challenge as the show went off the air. Currently, there is no official date as to when this match will take place. Also, while denied at this point, it is still heavily speculated that Roman Reigns vs. John Cena will still take place at SummerSlam in August.
