Edge made his return to WWE TV on the June 25th episode of SmackDown. The Rated R Superstar interrupted Roman Reigns championship celebration and attacked the Universal Champion. At the start of the segment, Paul Heyman stated that Reigns had beaten everyone on the roster, therefore there was no one left to challenge The Tribal Chief. At this point, Edge’s music hit and the former champion stormed to the ring:
Edge ran down to the ring and a brawl ensued. Roman was about to be hit by a Con-Chair-To by Edge, but the attempt was stopped by Jimmy Uso.
This is the first appearance by Edge on WWE TV since WrestleMania 37. The Rated R Superstar was in the main event of night two in a triple threat match for the Universal Championship along with Daniel Bryan and champion Reigns. Roman retained his title by pinning both Bryan and Edge in the match.
This attack seemingly sets up a Universal Championship match for Money in the Bank on July 18th. The return was a surprise to many, as many had speculated Edge would not appear until later in the year. Edge’s first advertised return date was the July 16th episode of SmackDown. This show is both the go-home SmackDown for Money in the Bank and the first main roster TV show with fans live in attendance since March 2020.
