So what is an Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch?

Last night on AEW Dynamite, the rivalry between Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega, went to a new level of brutality. The lights out match at Full Gear 2019 was brutal, with many fans claiming it went too far. However, it was announced last night that Omega vs Moxley for the AEW Championship will happen one more time. This time, in an exploding barbed wire deathmatch. This stipulation has not taken place on television in over 20 years, and has never even happened in a North American televised event. The closest thing is probably something similar to Sabu vs Abyss in a barbed wire massacre match at TNA Turning Point 2005. Below is a clip from that match:

Many fans may be wondering exactly what to expect. Below is a (very) rough outlines of the rules of this barbaric match:

  • Obvious but needed to be stated, there are no count outs or disqualifications
  • Regular ring ropes are replaced with barbed wire wrapped around ring posts
  • There are also contact points that will explode on impact both in and outside of the ring
  • Expect barbed wire wrapped weapons to be at ringside
  • Victory can only be achieved by pinfall or submission

For the right or the wrong reasons, this will be a match talked about for the rest of year, and not just by wrestling fans. They say anything can happen in wrestling, this time it looks like this will be true…
